Synopsis: When her past comes back to haunt her, a Baltimore prosecutor must turn to an FBI agent in order to save her kidnapped son in this heart-stopping novel from New York Times bestselling author Karen Rose.
Baltimore prosecutor Daphne Montgomery pulled herself out of a damaged past to build a solid life for herself and her son. But after she helps to convict a killer, her confidence is shattered once again by the news that her son has been kidnapped.
Daphne believes it’s connected to the recent high-profile trial, and at first FBI special agent Joseph Carter agrees. But together they find the reality to be even more troubling, and it runs deeper than Daphne fears. With her son’s life in jeopardy, she must unlock a dreadful secret about her past—and confront a truth that will change everything for those closest to her. And, if she survives, threaten the lives of everyone she loves.
Review: Holy heck! Did You Miss Me? by Karen Rose is one creepy and disturbing suspense novel. I’m still reeling from the effects of plot twist whiplash, as there were two major twists I didn’t see coming (no spoilers here) that added stomach-dropping edge to this killer thriller. Having started the Baltimore series in order, which I strongly recommend, I was introduced to Daphne Montgomery’s spunk, charm, and distinctive style in previous books. I was pleased to see that she got her own book so I could learn more about this memorable character. Having said that, the author does such a wonderful job of including enough back-story on the other characters and events that if you read this book as a standalone you’d be fine.
I adored watching Daphne’s and Joe’s relationship unfold, and appreciated the theme of unconditional acceptance and value of earned trust. The Daphne/Joe romance harmonized well with the enthralling mystery and suspense of the book. This action-packed book allows you great exposure to the villains’s motivations and points of view, and boy are they perverse and vengeful. Because there are so many scenes with different characters, there were times that I got confused on the different relationships. I was able to get is sorted out without too much trouble, yet it was a slight distraction.
I listened to the audiobook of Did You Miss Me?, which was wonderfully narrated by Marguerite Gavin. Marguerite’s voice perfectly captured the characters’ essence, bringing to life the fear, rage, depravity, hopefulness, love and triumph each felt. With Karen Rose’s writing and Marguerite Gavin’s narration, forever will the question “Did you miss me?” have sinister and chilling connotations. I can’t wait to read more from this outstanding romantic suspense series.
